Rome, Italy
Rome is a crowd magnet. All the popular "touristy" places were crowded beyond belief. We might have just seen 0.0001% of world’s population here! Perhaps because it’s a favourite budget destination for tourists from the US, the UK, and other South Asian countries. Yes, we have to do some catching up with the Euro currency. Italy is relatively cheap in terms of food and accommodation compared to France and Switzerland.
We were in Rome for a day trip from Florence. So we visited only the famous attractions. That was mistake #2. What was mistake #1? That we chose to visit only the famous attractions in a famous city and not the hidden gems of Italy. Well, next time.
Arch of Constantine
Basilica di Santa Maria in Aracoeli
Victor Emanuel II Monument — an imposing structure made entirely in marble, which stands out in the ochre colour scheme of the city
Three things happened in Rome: First, I lost one of a pair of earrings, which was my best friend’s gift. Second, a bird crapped on me first time in my life! Third, we had the BEST tiramisu EVER. In this order. We don’t have a photo of either of these. The first two, for obvious reasons. The third was serendipity, and we forgot to take a picture in that moment of absolute gastronomic euphoria.
Whenever you’re going to Rome, remember the name Pompi. It is a gelateria and pasticceria (where you'll get gelato, pastries, and cakes) with some of the best looking and great-tasting sweet treats. We had a classic and a berry tiramisu. Oh the tiramisu — light as air! So the reason for not clicking a photo was we got emotional! You’ll know what we mean when you try it. But otherwise Dilip continued his usual best behind the iLens.
Trevi Fountain — a masterpiece that looks more of a theatrical stage than a fountain
